Florida Senate - 2011 (NP) SR 2200 By Senator Braynon 33-03957-11 20112200__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the selfless humanitarian 3 efforts of Barth A. Green, M.D., the University of 4 Miami’s Global Institute for Community Health and 5 Development, and Project Medishare in providing 6 medical care to the people of Haiti. 7 8 WHEREAS, in 1994, Barth A. Green, M.D., cofounded Project 9 Medishare for Haiti in order to help improve the health status 10 of Haitians through an integrated, community approach to 11 development, serving more than 85,000 Haitians before the 12 disastrous 2010 earthquake, and 13 WHEREAS, Barth A. Green, M.D., is also a cofounder of the 14 University of Miami’s Global Institute for Community Health and 15 Development, a program focused on improving health care and 16 advancing community development in the Western Hemisphere, and 17 WHEREAS, in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Barth 18 A. Green, M.D., and his colleagues at the University of Miami’s 19 Global Institute for Community Health and Development and 20 Project Medishare established a massive relief effort, and 21 WHEREAS, as part of that initiative, the University of 22 Miami’s Global Institute/Project Medishare field hospital opened 23 in Haiti, treating more than 30,000 patients and performing more 24 than 1,500 emergency surgeries, and 25 WHEREAS, more than 5,000 rotating medical volunteers from 26 around the world served at the field hospital, which was the 27 only referral center for severe critical care and trauma cases 28 in Haiti, and 29 WHEREAS, 45,000 more patients have been treated since the 30 field hospital relocated to community Hospital Bernard Mevs in 31 downtown Port-au-Prince and began collaborating with the 32 Haitian-run facility, and 33 WHEREAS, Barth A. Green, M.D., and his colleagues at the 34 University of Miami’s Global Institute for Community Health and 35 Development and Project Medishare have been instrumental in 36 increasing access to health care internationally, NOW, 37 THEREFORE, 38 39 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 40 41 That the members of the Senate recognize the selfless 42 humanitarian efforts of Barth A. Green, M.D., and his colleagues 43 at the University of Miami’s Global Institute for Community 44 Health and Development and Project Medishare in providing 45 medical care to the people of Haiti both before and after the 46 disastrous 2010 earthquake. 47 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 48 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Barth A. Green, 49 M.D., as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida 50 Senate.
