RESOLUTION
Proposing
an amendment to the Constitution so as to provide that the Governor shall serve
a term of office of six years; to provide that persons holding the office of
Governor shall not succeed themselves; to provide that persons who have held the
office of Governor shall not again be eligible to be elected to that office; to
provide for the election for Governor; to provide for submission of this
amendment for ratification or rejection; and for other purposes.
BE
IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
SECTION
1.
Article
V, Section I of the Constitution is amended by revising Paragraph I as
follows:
"Paragraph
I.
Governor:
term of office; compensation and
allowances.
There
Beginning with
the person elected Governor in the 2010 general election,
there shall be a Governor who shall hold
office for a term of
four
six
years and until a successor shall be chosen and qualified. Persons holding the
office of Governor may
not
succeed themselves
for one
four-year term of office. Persons who
have held the office of Governor
and have
succeeded themselves as hereinbefore
provided shall not again be eligible to be
elected to that office
until after
the expiration of four years from the conclusion of their term as
Governor. The compensation and allowances
of the Governor shall be as provided by law."
SECTION
2.
Said
section is further amended by revising Paragraph II as follows:
"Paragraph
II.
Election
for Governor. An election for Governor
shall be held on Tuesday after the first Monday in November of
1986
2010,
and the Governor-elect shall be installed in office at the next session of the
General Assembly. An election for Governor shall take place
quadrennially
every six
years thereafter on said date unless
another date be fixed by the General Assembly. Said election shall be held at
the places of holding general elections in the several counties of this state,
in the manner prescribed for the election of members of the General Assembly,
and the electors shall be the same."
SECTION
3.
The
above proposed amendment to the Constitution shall be published and submitted as
provided in Article X, Section I, Paragraph II of the Constitution. The ballot
submitting the above proposed amendment shall have written or printed thereon
the following:
"( ) YES
( ) NO

Shall
the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to provide that the Governor shall
serve a term of office of six years; to provide that persons holding the office
of Governor shall not succeed themselves; to provide that persons who have held
the office of Governor shall not again be eligible to be elected to that office;
and to provide for the election for Governor?"

All
persons desiring to vote in favor of ratifying the proposed amendment shall vote
"Yes." All persons desiring to vote against ratifying the proposed amendment
shall vote "No." If such amendment shall be ratified as provided in said
Paragraph of the Constitution, it shall become a part of the Constitution of
this state.
