A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Larry Munson and inviting his family to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Larry Munson on November 20, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Larry Munson was born on September 27, 1922, in Minneapolis; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty as a veteran of World War II, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans; and

WHEREAS, he used his discharge pay after World War II to enroll in broadcasting school in 1945, followed by his first job in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he worked with another future Hall of Fame broadcaster, Curt Gowdy; and

WHEREAS, his broadcasting career finally brought him to Atlanta in 1966, where he was hired as part of the first Atlanta Braves broadcasting team, and later that year he was hired by Joel Eaves, UGA's athletic director, and Dan Magill, UGA's longtime publicist and historian, to become the voice of the Georgia Bulldogs; and

WHEREAS, Larry was honored by the Georgia General Assembly in 1983 for his great role in the Georgia championship football program and again in 1997 when he reached his 50th year in broadcasting; and

WHEREAS, he was inducted into the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1994, won the Chris Schenkel Award which recognizes career achievement in broadcasting from the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003, was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and won the Atlanta Sports Council's Furman Bisher Award for media excellence in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Larry passionately implored his beloved team to victory every Saturday and is remembered for the incredible bond he forged with the Georgia people; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his hard work and love for his state, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Larry Munson will long be remembered for his love of his Georgia Bulldogs, and this loyal man will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor the life and memory of Larry Munson and invite his family to be recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time designated by the Speaker of the House.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Larry Munson.
