RESOLUTION
Honoring
and remembering Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks on her birthday; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks entered this world on January 15, 1909, the beloved
daughter of Ada Myrick-Cody and Ronie Cody, Sr.; and
WHEREAS,
she is remembered for her dedication to the Civil Rights movement, for her
longtime membership and activism with the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and for conducting voter registration
drives when it was so dangerous, it could have led to violence and even death;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Cody-Brooks was a lifetime member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in
Warrenton, where she inspired members of her church family with her selflessness
and generosity; and
WHEREAS,
she improved the lives of countless young people, organizing reading programs
and teaching children the importance of a positive outlook and attitude;
and
WHEREAS,
known by all who loved her as "Mama," Mrs. Cody-Brooks was united in love and
marriage to Mose Brooks, Jr., and was blessed with four loving children,
Adelaide, Tyrone, Jerome, and Brenda; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Cody-Brooks holds a place in history as the first African American woman
hired at Steins and Tannenbaums clothing stores in Warrenton, Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and caring woman, Mrs. Cody-Brooks will long be remembered for
her love of family and friendship, and this generous wife, mother, friend, and
neighbor will be remembered for generations to come.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body remember the contributions of Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks and honor her life
and memory on the day of her birth.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mrs. Ruby Cody-Brooks.
