A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Judge John Henry Land; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Judge John Henry Land on November 30, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Judge Land was born on June 12, 1918 in Columbus, Georgia, a beloved son to the late Aaron Brewster Land and Mattie Miller Land; and

WHEREAS, he was a graduate of the Muscogee County School System and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939 where he earned his L.L.B. degree; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army during World War II, rising from private to the rank of major before he was honorably discharged in 1946; and

WHEREAS, Judge Land was united in love and marriage to Mary L. Land and was blessed with six remarkable children, John H. Land III, Martha Miller Christensen, Jeffrey Brooks Land, Jere Wilson Land, and Karen Parcerisas; and

WHEREAS, he then began a successful and varied career of public service, including a term as Senator in the Georgia General Assembly from 1949-1950 and as Judge of the Superior Court, taking office on December 20, 1964; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Judge John Henry Land will long be remembered for his love of family and friends, and this loyal son, husband, father, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Judge John Henry Land and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Judge John Henry Land.
