A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Colonel Stanley Newcomb Collins, Jr., United States Marine Corps; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Colonel Collins was born on January 30, 1937, in Alexandria, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, he graduated from the University of Maryland and received a Master's degree from the College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, he entered flight training as a NAV/CAD in 1956 at Naval Air Station and received his wings and commission as Second Lieutenant, USMCR, in 1958; and

WHEREAS, he served with HMR-362 and VMO-2 in Japan and Okinawa from 1959 to 1960, during which time he participated in Operation "Saddle Up" in support of South East Asia Treaty Organization forces in British North Borneo and Operation "Blue Star" in support of the Republic of China Forces in Taiwan; and

WHEREAS, after serving in several Marine Corps Reserve fighter and helicopter squadrons after active duty he retired in 1988 with the rank of Colonel; and

WHEREAS, he went on to work with Delta Air Lines as a pilot in 1965, initially serving as a flight engineer, advanced to Captain in 1972, later served as a line check airman, and retired in 1997 as an international Captain; and

WHEREAS, he became active in the Georgia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol after retiring from Delta Air Lines where he was rapidly qualified as a Mission Pilot and Incident Commander, training and directing members in many real and training exercises in Search and Rescue in the Georgia area and soloed a number of cadets on their aviation careers; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Collins served three terms from 1969 to 1974 in the Georgia Legislature representing DeKalb County on the House Appropriations, Education, Industry and Defense, and Veterans Affairs Committees; and

WHEREAS, he received the FAA, Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for 50 years of accident free flying in 2007 and the Senior Member of the Year Award for his work as the Georgia Wing Aircraft Maintenance Officer in 2010; and

WHEREAS, he is a proven leader in military, commercial, and general aviation in Georgia and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Colonel Stanley Newcomb Collins, Jr., United States Marine Corps, for mentoring many pilots and dedicating over five decades to flying.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Colonel Stanley Newcomb Collins, Jr.
