A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Ms. Jettie M. Adams; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Ms. Jettie M. Adams on January 24, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams was born on September 26, 1933, in Charleston, South Carolina, a beloved daughter of William Bradford Adams, Sr., and Louise Adams; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Ms. Adams was an active member of St. John Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Savannah State College, now Savannah State University, in 1956, where she was also inducted into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in 1954, and a Master of Education degree in elementary education from Savannah State College/Armstrong State College in 1978; and

WHEREAS, she was a teacher in the Chatham County Public School system for many years and continued to mentor and assist Savannah youngsters even after her retirement; and

WHEREAS, she has been honored numerous times, including being named the Savannah Sentinel in 1962, Teacher of the Year at Anderson Street School from 1966-1967, Distinguished Service Citation in 1972, Master Gardener Award from the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Georgia in 1982, Savannah Tribune Media Person of the Year in 1994, Beach High School Monumental Reunion 49ers to 50ites Bell of Freedom in 1995, Who's Who Hall of Fame in 2002, the Dorothy Taylor Sisterhood Award by the Savannah Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta in 2002, and Herald of Savannah Uncompromising Service Award in 2005; and

WHEREAS, she was a member of the Savannah State University National Alumni Association and worked with W.W. Law and the NAACP, where she was active with voter rights and voter registration; and

WHEREAS, she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Ms. Jettie M. Adams will long be remembered for her love of family and friendship, and this loyal daughter, sister, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Ms. Jettie M. Adams and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Ms. Jettie M. Adams.
