A RESOLUTION

Commending Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three young, African American men, A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown; and

WHEREAS, their intention was to establish a fraternity that exemplified the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service and one that viewed itself as a part of the community; and

WHEREAS, the founders of Phi Beta Sigma wanted members of their fraternity to be judged on their own merits rather than family background or affluence and where members would exist as part of a greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we"; and

WHEREAS, from its inception, the fraternity has served as a mechanism for delivering services to the community, an attitude reflected in the fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity"; and

WHEREAS, for the last 96 years, Phi Beta Sigma has stood at the forefront of change and service establishing the Phi Sigma Beta Educational Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Housing Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union, and the Phi Beta Sigma Charitable Outreach Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma continues a rich tradition of service and fellowship and the outstanding accomplishments of this fine organization are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., for their service to the community and the country.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
