A RESOLUTION


Honoring the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Hugh Hodgson School of Music has provided the State of Georgia, the United States, and the world with many great performances, teachers, researchers, and scholars in the musical arts; and

WHEREAS, Hugh Hodgson, the first professor of music at the University of Georgia and the School of Music's namesake, was appointed in 1928 to establish a department of fine arts and music; and

WHEREAS, between 1930 and 1941, the School of Music developed four degree programs in music, including the University of Georgia's first graduate degree in music; and

WHEREAS, since Hugh Hodgson's retirement in 1960, the School of Music has been ably served by capable administrators such as Edwin Gerchefski, Robert John, David Ledet, Olin Parker, Ralph Verrastro, Richard Graham, Donald Lowe, and its current director, Dale Monson; and

WHEREAS, in 2005, the School of Music relocated to a new building, and the building and the program were named in honor of Hugh Hodgson; and

WHEREAS, the Hugh Hodgson School of Music today is the academic home to over 450 undergraduate and graduate students, 65 faculty members, and renowned ensembles, including its Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Hodgson Singers, and Opera Ensemble; and

WHEREAS, students of Hugh Hodgson School of Music have been invited to play in concert halls, theaters, and houses of worship across the country and the world; and
WHEREAS, many alumni of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music today live in the State of Georgia and provide this state's youth with the fruits of an education received at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music; and

WHEREAS, it has consistently grown as an institution of performance, pedagogy, and scholarship in music; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting that the accomplishments of the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body honor and commend the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, its faculty, staff, alumni, and its current students for their continuing commitment to the highest levels of musical achievement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dale Monson, director of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.
