A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Laura and Walter Geiger; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Laura and Walter Geiger have long been recognized for commitment to their community, their love of history, and their fascination with the life and legacy of Gibert du Motier, the marquis de Lafayette; and

WHEREAS, business owners and philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Geiger are owners of The Barnesville Herald Gazette and the Pike County Journal and Reporter and are the embodiment of model citizens, contributing numerous hours of their time and donating resources to the community of Lamar County and the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, the Geigers purchased the historic Gachet House outside Barnesville, Georgia, where it is legend that Lafayette stayed during his visit to Georgia, and spent several years restoring the building to its original glory; and

WHEREAS, over the years, the Geigers have scoured antique shops collecting anything they could find associated with Lafayette, the French hero of the Revolutionary War, and have amassed a collection which features 16 pieces of art, including lithographs and engravings that depict the various stages of Lafayette's life; and

WHEREAS, after their recent sale of the Gachet House, the Geigers decided to donate their Lafayette collection to LaGrange College in honor of first-year student Hill Daniel who was paralyzed in a car accident a year ago; and

WHEREAS, the Geigers felt the collection should be in honor of Hill and his family for the example they set by rising above victimhood and exhibiting an incredible strength and faith in God; and

WHEREAS, in recognition for their generosity and service to the community, Mr. and Mrs. Geiger were recognized with 2009 Citizens of the Year Awards from the Barnesville-Lamar Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, the charity and kindness demonstrated by Mr. and Mrs. Geiger serve as an example to others and the State of Georgia is honored and blessed to have such a benevolent couple as citizens.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Laura and Walter Geiger on their generous gift to LaGrange College in recognition of a strong and enduring family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. and Mrs. Geiger.
