RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Desse Ervin Davis; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Desse Ervin Davis has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for
the vital role that he has played in the teaching profession and his deep
personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Davis was born in 1938 in Swainsboro, Georgia, a beloved son of Bessie
Lucille and Carlos Davis, and earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Valley State
College, a master's degree from Valdosta State College, and a specialist degree
in educational leadership from Georgia Southern College; and
WHEREAS,
he began his career in education at Emanuel County Elementary and High School as
a math teacher and challenged students outside the classroom as a coach for the
school's boys basketball, boys track, and football teams; and
WHEREAS,
after decades in the classroom, Mr. Davis accepted the position of principal at
Swainsboro High School, where he was instrumental in the school's recognition as
a Georgia Public School of Excellence and a National Blue Ribbon;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Davis was honored with numerous awards and accolades over the years,
including a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 1993 and 2009
Person of the Year from the Swainsboro Emanuel Chamber of Commerce;
and
WHEREAS,
he retired from Swainsboro High School after 32 years as an educator and
currently serves as principal at the Emanuel County Youth Development Center,
maintains several rental properties, and serves as a deacon at his church;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Davis's leadership and guidance have been instrumental as president of the
Swainsboro Evening Optimist Club and as a member of the Swainsboro Appeals
Board, Modern Woodmen of America, the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, and the Heart of Georgia Workforce Investment Board;
and
WHEREAS,
an athletic official for 25 years with the Georgia High School Association, Mr.
Davis has also served his community as an Emanuel County Commissioner since
1995; and
WHEREAS,
he is united in love and marriage for 41 wonderful years to his supportive wife,
Nellie Zackery, and has been blessed with three children, Desse, Jr., John
Carlos, and Natalie Cher; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his contributions to the students in this state, it is
abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary
commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body heartily and gratefully commend Mr. Desse Ervin Davis for his decades
of sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of public
education in Georgia and extend to him best wishes for the future.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Desse
Ervin Davis.
