RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Ms. Angel McCoughtry on being named the 2009 WNBA Rookie of the
Year and invite her to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Ms. Angel McCoughtry, a member of the Atlanta Dream and the first overall pick
in the 2009 WNBA draft, was recognized for her stellar first season in the
league and named the 2009 WNBA Rookie of the Year; and
WHEREAS,
a native of Baltimore, Maryland, Ms. McCoughtry attended the University of
Louisville, where she broke records and set the standard for excellence for
future generations; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. McCoughtry stands as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at
Louisville, with 2,779 points and 1,261 rebounds, averaging 20 points and 9.1
rebounds per game during her collegiate career; and
WHEREAS,
she has been recognized with numerous accolades and awards, including Big East
Defensive Player of the Year as a senior, was named to the Big East All-Freshman
Team, and was Louisville's first three-time All American; and
WHEREAS,
while at Louisville, Ms. McCoughtry was a three-time All-Big East first team
member, a three time WBCA/State Farm All American, and a first team All American
for the Associated Press, USBWA, ESPN.com, and CBS Sportsline.com;
and
WHEREAS,
as a senior, she led the Cardinals to the championship game and the first Final
Four in the program's history, set a new single season scoring record with 858
points, and led the nation in steals with 4.3 per game; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. McCoughtry was a Gold medalist on Team USA at the Pan American Games in
2007; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of her outstanding athletic achievements, it is abundantly
fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary commitment and
accomplishments of Ms. McCoughtry.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Ms. Angel McCoughtry for her years of hard work and
perseverance in basketball, congratulate her upon being named the 2009 WNBA
Rookie of the Year, and invite her to be recognized by the House of
Representatives at a date and time to be designated by the Speaker of the House
of Representatives.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Angel
McCoughtry.
