A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Sheriff Steve Wilson is highly regarded by the citizens of this state and by local government officials as a person of unquestioned integrity and dedication to the sound principles of law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, in honor of his commitment to serving the citizens of Walker County and his incredible career in law enforcement, the Rossville Exchange Club is hosting The Rossville Exchange Club Dinner Roast Honoring Steve Wilson; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of LaFayette High School, Sheriff Wilson has extensive training in law enforcement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Fingerprint School, the Georgia Department of Corrections Officer Mandate School at the University of Georgia, Floyd College's Police Academy, the Drug Enforcement Administration School, the Sheriffs' Elect Academy, Northern Virginia Community College, and the Naval Post Graduate School of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Wilson began his prestigious career in law enforcement 31 years ago as a fingerprint examiner for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., and worked with the Georgia Department of Corrections and the City of LaFayette Police Department before joining the Walker County Sheriff's Office in 1986; and

WHEREAS, elected to serve as sheriff in 1996, Sheriff Wilson has implemented Walker County's first School Resource Officer program at Ridgeland High School, established a K-9 Drug Detection Unit, upgraded the office's vehicle fleet using SPLOST funds, created an inmate chaplain program, started the Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety (CHAMPS) program for each fifth grade classroom in Walker County, and established a partnership with local and state officials to create the BAT Mobile, a mobile blood alcohol testing unit to target impaired drivers; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Wilson has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades throughout his career, including a Governor's Public Safety Award, 1995 Officer of the Year Award from the Rossville Exchange Club, and 2004 Walker County Citizen of the Year; and

WHEREAS, a community leader, Sheriff Wilson is an active member and past president of the LaFayette Optimist Club, past president of the Northwest Georgia Law Enforcement Executives Association, member of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Constitutional Officers' Association of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Wilson has exhibited extraordinary devotion to duty, outstanding loyalty, fine leadership, and meticulous attention to detail in all his duties, and his efficient and effective commitment to excellence has been continually recognized by his peers.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the selfless dedication exhibited by Sheriff Steve Wilson in carrying out the difficult duties of his vocation for over three decades.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Sheriff Steve Wilson.
