A RESOLUTION

Declaring Tuesday, March 23, 2010, as "Georgia Rides to the Capitol Day"; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, cycling increases physical work capacity, significantly reduces harmful cholesterol levels, reduces obesity, and lessens the risk of heart disease and heart attacks; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association supports and encourages all metropolitan Atlanta cities to participate in the 2010 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" campaign, departing from the cities of Decatur and Roswell during the 2010 legislative session; and

WHEREAS, the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association passed a resolution supporting the continued development of regional bike and pedestrian trails and for the creation of new trails and connectivity to existing trails; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Bikes Alliance, GEORGIA BIKES, Southern Bicycle League, Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, and Bike Roswell are organizations cosponsoring the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, working to improve bicycling conditions, promoting bicycling throughout the state, and striving toward giving children, the general public, law enforcement officials, and cyclists more knowledge about bicycle rights, responsibilities, and safety; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Transportation supports cycling as a cost-efficient means of transportation for Georgia's residents, also serving as a means of traffic congestion mitigation and environmentally friendly mobility; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Department of Transportation promotes working with local jurisdictions to improve cycling conditions by building or upgrading roads and facilities and encourages economic development opportunities that enhance bicycle and pedestrian mobility; and
WHEREAS, access to facilities promoting bicycle and pedestrian mobility enhances the quality of life in all Georgia communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body declare Tuesday, March 23, 2010, as "Georgia Rides to the Capitol Day" and commend the efforts of local and state officials to improve cycling trails and promote cycling as a viable alternative mode of transportation.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association and the organizers of the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event.
