A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Ms. Ruthie Garrett Walls; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ms. Ruthie Garrett Walls has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in leadership and her deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of her community; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Ruthie Garrett Walls moved to Atlanta in 1971 and as a single mother she was attempting to provide a better life for her five children; and

WHEREAS, she began her volunteerism during the time of the missing and murdered children by participating in several organized searches; and

WHEREAS, she served as secretary of neighborhood planning units and the Atlanta Planning and Advisory Board for three years; and

WHEREAS, she represented her neighborhood as a member of the Community Empowerment Advisory Board and as president of the Rebel Forest Neighborhood Association for 20 years saw a need in the community among the youth and founded the Metro Youth Action Council; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Walls met with children weekly, took them on field trips, helped them publish their own newsletters, established an after-school program, and had summer camp at the local church; and

WHEREAS, she got the children involved with events, such as the 1996 Olympics, formed a neighborhood youth choir, and participated in the John Birdine Community Service award ceremony; and

WHEREAS, she received a letter of commendation during her time volunteering with the Atlanta Project, an initiative by President Jimmy Carter; and

WHEREAS, she served on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society for eight years and on the Fulton County advisory committee during the planning and building of the Southeast Senior Center; and

WHEREAS, she has been honored numerous times, receiving the Metro Atlanta Coalition of 100 Black Women Unsung Heroines Award, the Arthur Beavers Community Service Award, the Julia Smith Certificate of Appreciation for devoted community volunteerism, Together Atlanta and the Neighborhood Achievement Award, the City of Atlanta Certificate of Appreciation, and was an Atlanta Youth Ambassador Chaperone; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Ms. Ruthie Garrett Walls on her efficient, effective, and selfless community service and recognize the amazing work she does to improve the lives of others.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Ruthie Garrett Walls.
