A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the 2008 Jonesboro High School Mock Trial team and inviting them
to appear before the House of Representatives; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Jonesboro High School Mock Trial team began the season in August of 2007,
working diligently towards their goal of winning a second consecutive national
title; and
WHEREAS,
the perfect combination of fresh techniques from new team members and experience
from the veterans formed a fantastic and unstoppable mock trial team that
competed in cases involving legal issues on fluctuating stock prices, company
buyouts, and terrorism; and
WHEREAS,
in February 2008, the team defeated Riverdale, North Clayton, and Morrow High
Schools to clinch the Clayton County regional competition; and
WHEREAS,
a month later, the team out-performed their competitors once again in the state
championship, defeating many teams from across the state including Central Macon
in the semifinals and Grady High School in the championship round;
and
WHEREAS,
after competing at the state level, the 2008 Jonesboro High School Mock Trial
team went on to outshine their competitors at the national championship
competition, defeating Kalamazoo High School in the final round for the second
time in two years; and
WHEREAS,
the Jonesboro High School Mock Trial teams have earned their reputations as
powerhouses in competitions, winning their regional competition 20 out of 22
years, the state competition six times in the past 20 years, and the national
competition twice; and
WHEREAS,
the 2008 team was composed of the stellar competitors Laura Parkhouse, Dominique
Delgado, Joe Strickland, Brian Bady, Ralph Wilson, Jurod James, Lindsey Hargis,
Bridget Harris, Braeden Orr, Adrienne Marshall, Tabais Kelly, Jayda Hazell,
Miguelande Charlestin, Avion Jackson, and Kayla Daniels; and
WHEREAS,
the members of this young team have developed and refined the mental agility,
verbal adroitness, and intellectual acumen under the guidance of their dedicated
coaches: Honorable John C. Carbo, Honorable Deborah Benefield, Tasha Mosley,
Katie Powers, Andrew Cox, and Anna Cox; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding record of scholarly
achievement and peerless performance of the members of the team be recognized
appropriately.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body congratulate the 2008 Jonesboro High School mock trial team on their
national championship title.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the above-named students and coaches are invited to
appear before the House of Representatives for purposes of being recognized by
the House and receiving appropriate copies of this resolution at a date and time
to be fixed by the Speaker of the House.
