A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending the Sylvania Information Center upon the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Sylvania Information Center, originally called the Welcome Station, was the first welcome center in the State of Georgia and was completed and opened on January 20, 1960, on the Wade Plantation off of Highway 301, one of the state's heaviest traveled tourist locations; and

WHEREAS, A.J. Rowan, owner of the Wade Plantation, deeded the land to this state and in 1972 the State of Georgia purchased 2.03 acres behind the welcome center and constructed a water treatment plant to accommodate more traffic; and

WHEREAS, the Sylvania Information Center was the forerunner of ten additional state visitor information centers to open between 1963 and 1980 which are located on the interstates bordering Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina, and together they make up the 11 Gateways into Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the Sylvania Information Center is not only the first visitor center built in this state but also the oldest operating one in the U.S.; and

WHEREAS, the image of Georgia has greatly improved and the well-trained personnel of the state centers have played a major role in seeing tourism evolve as the second largest industry in this state; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this establishment be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Sylvania Information Center for its contributions to tourism for the State of Georgia over the last 50 years.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public and the press.
