RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Dr. Gary A. McGaha; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Dr. Gary A. McGaha has long been recognized for the vital role that he has
played in higher education and his deep personal commitment to students;
and
WHEREAS,
born in Rienzi, Mississippi, Dr. McGaha graduated magna cum laude from
Mississippi Valley State University in 1972, earned a Master of Arts degree from
Bowling Green State University in 1973, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from
the University of Mississippi in 1976; and
WHEREAS,
he began his career working as a senior level administrator at Kentucky State
University where he served as the administrative assistant to the president, as
chair of the department of political science and history, and as the associate
vice president for academic affairs; and
WHEREAS,
in 1983, Dr. McGaha accepted a position at Morehouse School of Medicine where he
served as an executive assistant for ten years; and
WHEREAS,
he came to Atlanta Metropolitan College (AMC) in 1993 to chair the division of
social sciences, left in 2002 to become dean of academic services for the
Dunwoody campus and the Alpharetta site of Georgia Perimeter College, and
returned to AMC in 2006 as vice president of academic affairs where he was named
interim president in 2006 and appointed as permanent president in 2007;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. McGaha serves as chairman of the board of directors for Project GRAD Atlanta
and is a member of the board of directors for the Metropolitan Regional
Educational Service Agency and the Southern Association of Community, Junior and
Technical Colleges; and
WHEREAS,
a man of deep and abiding faith, Dr. McGaha is an active member of Greenforest
Community Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon and Sunday School teacher;
and
WHEREAS,
he is united in love and marriage to the former Juliette Wilkinson and together
they are blessed with two remarkable daughters and two wonderful sons;
and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of
this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Dr. Gary A. McGaha for his sacrifice, foresight, and
contributions on behalf of education and for the positive influence he has had
upon the lives and futures of countless young people.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Gary A.
McGaha.
