A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Pastor Leroy Barber's initiative, "Green My Hood"; and for other
purposes
WHEREAS,
Pastor Leroy Barber, founder of "Green My Hood" in Atlanta, has dedicated more
than 20 years to eradicating poverty, confronting homelessness, restoring local
neighborhoods, healing racism, and living by what Dr. King called, "the beloved
community"; and
WHEREAS,
he pastors a church in inner-city Atlanta and is president of Mission Year, a
national urban initiative introducing 18-29 year olds to mission and communal
living in city centers for one year of their lives; and
WHEREAS,
Pastor Barber, drawing from Biblical inspiration, realized that environmental
issues in his community, Historic South Atlanta, are a part of structural
injustice and dedicated himself to solving this injustice; and
WHEREAS,
inner-city and impoverished African American children are more likely to suffer
from asthma, be killed from asthma, suffer pedestrian fatalities, and suffer the
effects of lead paint; and
WHEREAS,
a pastor and leader in the African American community, Pastor Barber has
dedicated himself to fighting these environmental injustices; and
WHEREAS,
amidst a toxic waste facility, a trash transfer station, chemical plants, an
impoundment lot for towed vehicles, freight operations, trucking operations,
antiquated sewer systems, dilapidated homes with lead paint, and illegal
dumping, Pastor Barber created the "Green My Hood" program to empower residents
and volunteers alike to clean up their neighborhood and become a community of
stewards to the Earth; and
WHEREAS,
through the creation of community gardens, organized neighborhood clean-up days,
planned electronics and tire recycling days, and through prearranged energy
efficient lightbulb donations to seniors in his neighborhood, Pastor Barber has
begun to fulfill his mission; and
WHEREAS,
Pastor Barber's sincere commitment to justice has allowed him to begin a
transformation of his community through his "Green My Hood" program, and it is
abundantly fitting and proper that this distinguished Georgian be appropriately
recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Pastor Leroy Barber and his "Green My Hood" program for
striving to dismantle structural injustice and their extraordinary contributions
to the community and the State of Georgia.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Pastor Leroy
Barber.
