RESOLUTION
Honoring
and commending Representative DuBose Porter; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
DuBose Porter was born in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia, the son of
Dr. Lester and Katherine D. Porter, and he earned his Eagle Scout Badge in
1970 and graduated from Dublin High School in 1971; and
WHEREAS,
he attended Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, where he received a
bachelor's degree in English in 1975, and participated in Davidson's program at
Oxford University in Oxford, England, and spent the summer between his sophomore
and junior year working and traveling in Australia; and
WHEREAS,
after college, DuBose Porter interned in Washington, D. C., for Georgia Senator
Sam Nunn before attending Cumberland Law School at Samford University,
Birmingham, and returning to his native Dublin to form the law firm of Nelson
& Porter. In 1987, he and Griffin Lovett purchased
The Courier
Herald, the daily newspaper in Dublin.
Today DuBose Porter is editor of the paper and chairman of the board of the
publishing company as well as executive editor of
The Soperton
News,
The Montgomery
Monitor,
The Wheeler County
Eagle,
The Johnson
Journal,
The Twiggs Times New
Era,
The Cochran
Journal,
The Wilkinson County
Post, and
The Baldwin
Bulletin. He is Executive Editor of these
nine publications. Since 1987, he has been a stockholder and member of the
Board of Directors of the Bank of Dudley; and
WHEREAS,
in 1982, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. In 1991 and
1992, he served as Administration Floor Leader to Governor Zell Miller. In
January, 2003, he was elected Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of
Representatives. Representative Porter is now in his 14th term and serves on
the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Appropriations, Ethics, and Rules
Committees. In January, 2005, he was elected Leader of the Democratic Caucus of
the House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS,
he is a trustee for the Nature Conservancy of Georgia and former member of Board
of Trustees and The Board of Advisors of The Georgia Trust for Historic
Preservation. He is the former President of the Georgia Press Association and
of the Georgia Library Trustees Association and served as a member of Governor
Miller̓s Preservation 2000 Committee; and
WHEREAS,
he is married to Carol Dodd of Wrightsville, Georgia, and they have four sons,
Stephen DuBose Porter, Jr., Guyton McCall Porter, and twins Asa Shearouse Porter
and Inman Lee Porter; and
WHEREAS,
Representative Porter has dedicated 28 years to the betterment of the citizens
of the State of Georgia, and it is only right and proper that the members of
this body honor and commend him on the final day of his last session as a member
of the House of Representatives.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Representative DuBose Porter for his many years of dedicated
public service as a member of the House of Representatives and express to him
their sincerest best wishes for continued success in the future.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to
Representative DuBose Porter.
