RESOLUTION
Honoring
the lives and memories of Mr. Francis Colclough Smith and Mrs. Marjorie Robie
Smith; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
born on August 23, 1916, Mr. Francis Colclough Smith was the beloved son of Lila
Colclough and Dr. Robert Hughes Smith and served as a guardian of this nation's
freedom and liberty with the United States Army as a first lieutenant in E
Company of the 143rd Infantry, 5th Army under General Mark Clark;
and
WHEREAS,
a World War II veteran, Mr. Smith fought in the Battle of Anzio during America's
march to Rome and was awarded the Legion of Merit for inventing a device that
could be added to a standard mine detector which enabled operators to detect
trip wires; and
WHEREAS,
his groundbreaking and ingenious invention saved countless lives and greatly
reduced the danger posed to soldiers tasked with removing mines from fields
where trip wires had been set; and
WHEREAS,
this Georgia peach farmer and entrepreneur was united in love and marriage to
Mrs. Marjorie Robie Smith and the couple were blessed with two remarkable
children, Mary Smith Mills and Bob Smith, five grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Marjorie "Margie" Robie Smith was born May 7, 1924, the beloved daughter of
Mary Louise and Adalai Robie, and dedicated 27 years to molding young minds and
challenging students at Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia,
where she taught Georgia history and civics; and
WHEREAS,
during her nearly three decades in the field of education, Mrs. Smith inspired
her students to achieve their utmost potential, serving as a sponsor for the
school's cheerleading squad and 4-H program; and
WHEREAS,
a teacher's teacher, Mrs. Smith mentored new teachers and was known to help her
students in every way, attending each game played by the school's basketball
teams and serving as a chaperone on bus rides for the away games;
and
WHEREAS,
Mrs. Smith was a faithful and active member of Asford Memorial Methodist Church
in Watkinsville and was known for her famous lemon meringue pies, pecan pies,
and her amazing cooking abilities; and
WHEREAS,
the devotion, patience, and understanding Mr. and Mrs. Smith demonstrated
provided the foundation and framework of success in which their family developed
and flourished; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. and Mrs. Smith made the world a better place in which to live, with many
incredible contributions to their family, community, and state, and it is
abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this
distinguished Georgia couple be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the lives and legacies of Mr. Francis Colclough Smith and Mrs.
Marjorie Robie Smith.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
