A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, Inc., and its Sprint Canoe and Kayak program; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, Inc., (LCKC) in Gainesville, Georgia, is an organization devoted to promoting excellence through competition; and

WHEREAS, the Olympic sprint program at LCKC was formed in anticipation of the city of Gainesville's hosting of the 1996 Olympic Games sprint canoe and kayak events; and

WHEREAS, the program began with a handful of local youths who were introduced to the sport of sprint canoe and kayak as boat holders for the world's best athletes during Olympic competition; and

WHEREAS, since the 1996 Olympics, the Sprint Canoe and Kayak program at LCKC has achieved great success and has grown to include a wide range of age groups and skill levels; and

WHEREAS, five members of the LCKC program are currently at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, training to earn a position on the United States Olympic team heading to the United Kingdom for the Olympic Games in 2012; and

WHEREAS, eleven LCKC athletes made the United States Junior Development Team in 2008, and 12 athletes will compete this April in the Junior Trials for a position on the Junior National Team which will compete in Russia at the 2009 Junior World Championships; and

WHEREAS, the Sprint Canoe and Kayak program athletes have demonstrated great dedication, commitment, and talent to achieve incredible success while maintaining academic excellence and have come to earn their well-deserved reputation for high standards of athletic achievement and superior sportsmanship.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, Inc., on its efforts to promote good health and exercise to ensure the personal development of the youth of Georgia and applaud the many esteemed accomplishments of the members of the organization's Sprint Canoe and Kayak program.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, Inc.
