A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem (Hebrew Israelite Community); and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the anointed spiritual leader of the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, Ben Ammi Ben-Israel, who was inspired by the vision to return to the Promised Land, led members of the Hebrew Israelite Community to Israel in 1969 from the United States via Liberia; and

WHEREAS, the Hebrew Israelite Community is a communal settlement in Dimona, Israel, known for its healthy holistic lifestyle; all members are practicing vegans, and adult members exercise at least three times a week; and

WHEREAS, in the nearly 40 years since the settlement was established, the Community has moved from being unknown to become Guardians of Peace, one of the largest urban kibbutzim in Israel; and

WHEREAS, with about 2,000 members in Dimona, the Hebrew Israelite Community also has families in Arad, Mitzpe Ramon, and the Tiberias area; and

WHEREAS, the Hebrew Israelites are led by a council of 12 princes which is headed by Ben Ammi Ben-Israel who oversees the spiritual development of the kibbutz, while the daily affairs of the Community are guided by another 12 ministers called the Community Management Council; and

WHEREAS, Community spokespersons of the Hebrew Israelites are effective contributors to Israel's national public relations effort, speaking to audiences on behalf of the State of Israel; and

WHEREAS, the Community operates a vegan eatery in Tel Aviv, serves in the military, and has musicians who perform across Israel and around the world; and

WHEREAS, the Community has attracted visitors from around the world because of its healthy lifestyle and organic agriculture that has resulted in no illnesses like cancer, AIDS, or even high blood pressure; and

WHEREAS, their students have represented Israel in international academic competitions, and their athletes have represented the nation in Europe in track and field and national softball events; and

WHEREAS, in February, 2005, the Community and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference established by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., opened the Dr. Martin Luther King/SCLC-Ben Ammi Institute for a New Humanity in Dimona to teach conflict resolution, holistic nonviolence, and reconciliation to all humanity; and

WHEREAS, the culture and tradition of the Hebrew Israelite Community is a rich one, and the Community's numerous contributions are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize the Hebrew Israelite Community for its service to the nation of Israel and commend their 40 years of history.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Hebrew Israelite Community.
