A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
Youth & College Division on its 75th anniversary; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth
& College Division was founded on March 9, 1936, and celebrates 75 years of
youth leadership and activism this year; and
WHEREAS,
under the guidance of its first national youth director, Juanita Jackson
Mitchell, the NAACP Youth & College Division has been known as a strong
presence in every aspect of advancement of young people; and
WHEREAS,
the NAACP Youth & College Division continues to inform youth of the problems
affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities; to advance
the economic, education, social, and political status of African Americans and
other racial and ethnic minorities and their harmonious cooperation with other
peoples; to stimulate an appreciation of the African Diaspora and the
contribution of other people of color to civilization; and to develop an
intelligent, militant effective youth leadership; and
WHEREAS,
the Atlanta University Center NAACP college chapters were instrumental in the
desegregation of Rich's Department stores in the 1960's; and
WHEREAS,
the Savannah Youth Council participated in the wade-ins at Tybee Beach in the
1960's; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia State Youth & College Division has championed criminal justice
and was instrumental in the Marcus Dixon and Genarlow Wilson prayer vigils and
release rallies; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Youth & College Division rallied a delegation to Biloxi,
Mississippi, during the aftermath of Katrina in 2005; and
WHEREAS,
the NAACP Georgia State Youth & College Division continues to fight in the
areas of educational equity, economic empowerment, juvenile justice, civic
engagement, and health advocacy; and
WHEREAS,
the NAACP's state conferences, branches, youth councils, high school chapters,
and college chapters across the country will also participate in this 75th
anniversary celebration; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine
organization and its numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be
appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body recognize the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People Youth & College Division for its dedication to uplifting young
African Americans and congratulate its members on the occasion of its 75th
anniversary.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the NAACP
Youth & College Division.
