A
RESOLUTION
Commending
Georgia's National Guard troops; recognizing March 5, 2009, as National Guard
Day at the state capitol; inviting Major General William T. Nesbitt to appear
before the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
since its inception in 1773, the Georgia militia, now the Georgia National
Guard, has had a significant role in the defense of the colony, state, and
nation; and
WHEREAS,
throughout history, Americans have been called upon to defend our nation's
liberties and freedoms, and the men and women of the Georgia National Guard have
served with dedication and valor to defend this nation and secure the freedoms
we hold dear today; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia Army National Guard members have served on active duty in support of the
Global War on Terrorism, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and other Middle
Eastern locations as well as at military bases across the United States;
and
WHEREAS,
the members of the Georgia National Guard have been ready when our fellow
Georgians needed assistance during hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods;
and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia National Guard extends a helping hand to local communities through
civic action programs that place Georgia National Guard resources and know-how
at the disposal of local communities; and
WHEREAS,
the future of the Georgia National Guard rests upon Georgians who embody the
values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do";
and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia National Guard remains a professional, prepared, and highly trained
organization, tested by crises, and more than able to respond at home or abroad;
and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia National Guard offers outstanding opportunities for education in
numerous specialties and provides scholarships which enable its members to earn
college degrees; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia National Guard continues to add value to the State of Georgia and
communities through its Youth Challenge Academy, the STARBASE program, the
Counterdrug Task force, and its ongoing State Partnership with the Republic of
Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia State Defense Force, the third leg of the Georgia Department of
Defense, continues to provide trained volunteers to backfill in critical areas
for Georgia Guardsmen called to active duty.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body wholeheartedly commend Georgia's National Guard troops as they risk
and sacrifice their lives for the safety of Americans at home, its citizens
abroad, and the native citizens of foreign countries they protect; recognize
March 5, 2009, as National Guard Day at the state capitol; and invite Major
General William T. Nesbitt to appear before the House of Representatives at a
date and time to be determined by the Speaker.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia
National Guard and to Major General William T. Nesbitt.
