A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (GBCCF) was founded in 1994 by breast
cancer survivors Ruth Eldredge and Tobyanne Sidman; and
WHEREAS,
a nonprofit organization, GBCCF's mission is to advocate at the state and
national levels for breast cancer research funding, access to health care for
all Americans, and breast cancer legislation that will be of benefit to all; to
educate legislators and the public about the importance of early detection,
lifestyle changes, treatment, and research; and to eradicate breast cancer;
and
WHEREAS,
at the national level, GBCCF has helped increase breast cancer research funding
nine-fold since 1991; pass the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act, which
provides treatment to low-income, uninsured women screened and diagnosed with
breast and cervical cancer through the CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer
Early Detection Program; enact the Access to Cancer Therapies Act, which
provides medicare coverage for all oral cancer medications; and establish the
Department of Defense Peer-Reviewed Breast Cancer Research program;
and
WHEREAS,
in Georgia, GBCCF has played a key role in assuring access to mammograms, Pap
smears, and prostate cancer tests and in allowing doctors and patients to
determine appropriate hospital stays after a mastectomy or lymph node
dissection; and
WHEREAS,
the GBCCF has helped secure funding for BreasTest & More breast and cervical
cancer screening and implemented the Medicaid Breast and Cervical Cancer
treatment program for Georgians; and
WHEREAS,
GBCCF has helped raise revenues to fight breast cancer in Georgia through
enactment of an income tax check-off that has yielded over $2.75 million for
breast cancer research and the breast cancer license plate that has generated
over $2 million for education, screening, and treatment services for women in
need; and
WHEREAS,
through its advocacy program, GBCCF reaches out to Georgians all over this state
to hear their stories and concerns, to educate about breast cancer, to build
advocacy skills, and to help survivors, families, and friends affected by breast
cancer make their voices heard.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund on its work for
prevention, early detection, treatment, and eventual eradication of breast
cancer.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia
Breast Cancer Coalition Fund.
