A RESOLUTION


Commending Mr. Hoyt R. Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Mr. Hoyt R. Smith was born on April 2, 1911, in Nicholson, Georgia, the beloved son of George and Emma Smith, and this year, he enjoys the rare distinction of celebrating his 100th birthday; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith grew up working on his family's farm and trapping to help support the family and was a member of the Civilian Conversation Corp; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army Air Corp, valiantly and courageously protecting fellow Americans during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was united in love and marriage to Willometer "Meta" Smith in 1941, and they enjoyed 67 wonderful years together before her passing in 2008; and

WHEREAS, he is the proud father of three children, Latona "Toni" McGinnis, Delores "Dee" Wilson, and Robert "Bob" Smith; grandfather of Mark McGinnis and Amy Wilson MacDonald; and great-grandfather of Derrick Hammond, Emily MacDonald, Katie MacDonald, Alex MacDonald, and Jillian Haughey; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith worked in the construction industry and served as project manager with the University of Georgia until his retirement in the mid 1970's and later returned to the school as a consultant for the Lucy Cobb Complex historical restoration project; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Smith was a long-time member of Nicholson United Methodist Church, where he held numerous leadership positions, including lay leader, administrative board chair, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, church trustee, pastor-parish relations committee, and lay delegate to the North Georgia Annual Conference; and

WHEREAS, a community leader, Mr. Smith served as scout master for Boy Scout Troop 86 and received a grant for the creation of the Nicholson Water Association, which he ran for many years with his wife; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Smith possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and

WHEREAS, a kind and generous man, Mr. Smith brings joy and happiness to his many friends, neighbors, and family members who have the great pleasure of knowing him; and

WHEREAS, by the example Mr. Smith has made of his life, he makes this world a better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that he be appropriately recognized during this very special and memorable time of his life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mr. Hoyt R. Smith for his loving and dedicated service to the members of his family and the citizens of his community, congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his 100th birthday, and extend to him best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Hoyt R. Smith.
