A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Ross Lee Rountree; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. Ross Lee Rountree; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rountree was born on October 18, 1916, a beloved son of Virgil Payne Rountree and Isabel Durden Rountree; and

WHEREAS, he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Marine Corps, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans in the Pacific Theater during World War II and receiving a Bronze Star for his service; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rountree earned a bachelor's degree from Georgia Teachers College, taught industrial arts in Soperton and Hazelhurst, and coached football and basketball; and

WHEREAS, he was selected to serve as the first principal of Effingham County High School, a position he held for 18 years, and was instrumental in starting the school's football and band programs; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rountree was a member of the organizing committee for the Boy Scouts of America in Effingham County, the Coastal Empire Council, American Legion Post 209, and the Lions Club; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Rountree was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as a councilman and vice-chairman; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rountree was united in love and marriage to his college sweetheart, Lorene, on June 5, 1942, and was blessed with three remarkable children, Meredith, Sophie, and Carey, and ten wonderful grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Rountree will long be remembered for his love of football, family, and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Ross Lee Rountree and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Ross Lee Rountree.
