A RESOLUTION

Commending the Golden Isles Shag Club and Mr. Kennan Carter, owner of Ziggy Mahoney's; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Golden Isles Shag Club (GISC) was formed in August of 1989 by a handful of residents of Glynn County, Georgia, who shared a mutual affection for Carolina beach music and shag dancing; and

WHEREAS, formed with the purpose of promoting and preserving the Carolina Shag, the GISC has grown from a small dedicated group to an annual membership of over 100; and

WHEREAS, to keep the tradition of shag dancing alive, the GISC offers shag dance lessons, performs public instructional demonstrations, and hosts dance events; and

WHEREAS, since 1991, the GISC has hosted an annual party called The Sand Gnat Shag-A-Ganza in Jekyll Island, Georgia, attracting hundreds of shag enthusiasts from Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the GISC is a member of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs, which serves as a parent organization for shag clubs across the country in nearly 100 cities with approximately 10,000 members; and

WHEREAS, on March 16, 1994, the GISC held its first gathering at Mr. Kennan Carter's club, Ziggy Mahoney's in St. Simons, and these dedicated dancers have been shagging there once a week ever since; and

WHEREAS, the GISC has heightened the appreciation of shagging with dedicated officers Judy Bennett, Tom Holmes, Donita Taylor, and Frank Cullen; and board members Angie Michael, Jim Belvin, Jim Royal, Pat Rountree, Richard Applegate, Jimmy Stevenson, and Phyllis Buffkin.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Golden Isles Shag Club for preserving the Carolina Shag and its rich historical traditions and recognize Mr. Kennan Carter for providing the Golden Isle Shag Club with an amazing venue for their gatherings.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Golden Isles Shag Club and Mr. Kennan Carter.
