A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., was founded in 1935 based upon the work and ideals of world-renowned educator and human rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune with a mission to harness the collective power of African American women in order to improve themselves, their families, and their communities; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., is fulfilled through the organization's many research, advocacy, and national and community based services and programs on issues of health, education, and economic empowerment in the United States and Africa; and

WHEREAS, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., has an outreach of nearly four million women, 39 national affiliates, and more than 240 sections; and

WHEREAS, the DeKalb Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., was formed in January of 1990 with 50 founding members; and

WHEREAS, today, the DeKalb Section has a membership of more than 200 men and women of all races, who are actively involved in politics, heath and welfare, economic development, elder care, youth education, and mentoring throughout DeKalb County, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the goal of the DeKalb Section is to fill community gaps that exist in society, focusing on the concerns of minority women and utilizing the collective efforts of a network of volunteers in order to enhance community service and actions; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments and achievements of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., over the past seven decades have been remarkable, and its DeKalb Section has vastly improved the lives, families, and communities of African American women throughout the nation and Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that members of this body join in recognizing the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., and its DeKalb Section for the great work this organization continues to do for the State of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the current president of the DeKalb Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Rubie Tolbert-Williams, and to each member of the same.
