A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Officer Elmer "Buddy" Basco Christian III; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Officer Elmer "Buddy" Basco Christian III on March 22, 2011, who was lost in the line of duty; and

WHEREAS, Officer Christian was a beloved son of Carolyn Roberts Christian and Elmer "Bud" Basco Christian II, was the dear brother of Jason Christian, and earned the nickname "Buddy" because he was a friend to everyone he met; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Madison County High School, Officer Christian was highly regarded as a person of unquestioned integrity and dedication to the sound principles of law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, he joined the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in December, 2002, and took a three year hiatus from law enforcement to work for the traffic engineering division of the Athens-Clarke Transportation and Public Works Department before returning to police work; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Officer Christian was an active member of Hull Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, taught Sunday school, worked with the Awana Children's Program, operated the sound equipment for the church, led a men's group, and performed volunteer work; and

WHEREAS, Officer Christian was united in love and marriage to Melissa Rutledge Christian, and was blessed with two remarkable children, Callie and Wyatt; and

WHEREAS, a true servant to the community, Officer Christian was a member of the Hull Volunteer Fire Department, where he also served as chaplain, and was a member of the Athens-Clarke County Police Honor Guard; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, this law enforcement officer exhibited extraordinary devotion to duty, outstanding loyalty, fine leadership, and meticulous attention to detail in all his duties, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and associates with his unyielding service to this state; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Officer Christian will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal son, husband, brother, father, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Officer Elmer "Buddy" Basco Christian III and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Officer Elmer "Buddy" Basco Christian III.
