BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
AN ACT
To
amend Part 5 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the Official Code of
Georgia Annotated, relating to board of regents scholarships, so as to authorize
certain additional types of student financial assistance for medical and dental
students at the Medical College of Georgia; to provide for related matters; to
repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:
SECTION
1.
Part
5 of Article 7 of Chapter 3 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia
Annotated, relating to board of regents scholarships, is amended by revising
Code Section 20-3-500, relating to granting of scholarships, as
follows:
"20-3-500.
(a)
The board of regents shall have the authority to grant to qualified students,
who are citizens and bona fide residents of the State of Georgia and who would
not otherwise have available the funds necessary to obtain an education, such
scholarships as are necessary for them to complete programs of study offered by
institutions of the University System of Georgia, with the exception of the
program leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The terms and conditions
thereof shall be prescribed and regulated by the board of regents but shall
include the condition that recipients of such scholarships shall, upon the
completion of their programs of study, reside in the State of Georgia and engage
in activities for which they were prepared through the scholarships for a period
of one year for each $1,000.00 received.
(b)
In addition to financial assistance provided for in subsection (a) of this Code
section, the board of regents shall have specific authority to grant financial
assistance to medical and dental students at the Medical College of Georgia in
the form of service cancelable loans to cover a portion of tuition costs. Such
loans shall be repaid through the provision of services in Georgia according to
terms to be specified therein. If any portion of such a loan is not repaid
through service, the recipient shall become obligated for monetary repayment of
twice the amount of the loan not repaid through
service."
SECTION
2.
All
laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.
