A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Mike O'Brien on the occasion of his retirement; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Mike O'Brien has long been recognized for his ability to cultivate talented
young athletes and his deep personal commitment to the education of the future
leaders of this state; and
WHEREAS,
he has diligently and conscientiously devoted his time, talents, and energy for
the past 41 years to challenging players on the football field and inspiring
students in the classroom; and
WHEREAS,
during his over four decades coaching football at Valdosta and Woodstock High
Schools, Coach O'Brien amassed an incredible career record of 112 wins, 54
losses, and one tie; and
WHEREAS,
under his leadership, Valdosta High School won the Georgia State Championship in
1998, three regional titles, and was state runner-up in 1996; and
WHEREAS,
Coach O'Brien has been recognized with numerous awards and honors during his
career, including being named GACA and GHSA State Coach of the Year in 1998 and
Coach of the Year in 2009 by the Georgia state officials association;
and
WHEREAS,
although Woodstock High was facing a long losing streak when he started with the
program in 2003, Coach O'Brien successfully reorganized the program in his first
year, completing the season with a 5-5 record and leading the team to a state
championship playoff game just two years later; and
WHEREAS,
with an overall playoff record as a head coach of 19-8, Coach O'Brien has
established a legacy and tradition of excellence in his football programs and
though he will be sorely missed upon his retirement, the amazing influence he
has had upon his players and students will be ever-present.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Mr. Mike O'Brien for his over four decades of sacrifice, foresight,
accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education in Georgia and for the
positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young
people in this state, congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his
retirement, and extend to him sincere best wishes for many years of health and
happiness in the future.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Mike O'Brien.
