RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Reverend Jimmie Jakes, Sr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Reverend Jimmie Jakes, Sr., on January 25, 2009;
and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Jakes was born on May 5, 1943, in Phenix City, Alabama, a beloved son
of the late James Clark Jakes and Jessie Bell Bellamy Jakes; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Jakes has long been recognized by the citizens of this nation for the
vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to
the welfare of the citizens of the United States as a Vietnam veteran;
and
WHEREAS,
a man of great faith and devotion, Reverend Jakes was an active member of Gaines
Chapel and then Nichols Chapel AME Church; and
WHEREAS,
Reverend Jakes was united in love and marriage to Oshawzale L. "Cindy" Jakes for
26 years, and the two were blessed with five loving and devoted children,
Jimmie, Jr., Kimberly, Denise, Kameelah, and Jessica; and
WHEREAS,
a great source of pride and joy, Reverend Jakes also had eight grandchildren:
Jamario, Kalan, Keila, Jeydan, Sheldon, Sasha, Malachi, and Messiah;
and
WHEREAS,
he embodied the spirit of service, willing to find meaning in something greater
than himself and serving as a guardian of this nation's freedom, and it is
abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished American be recognized appropriately.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body hereby joins in honoring
the life and memory of Reverend Jimmie Jakes, Sr. and expressing its
appreciation of his devotion and dedication to his family, his many contributions to his community and the State of Georgia, and his selfless sacrifice as a guardian of this nation's liberty.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Reverend
Jakes.
