A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Dr. Solomon Desmond Tutu; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Dr. Solomon Desmond Tutu on April 15, 2009; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Tutu was born on May 13, 1949, in Calabar, Nigeria, a beloved son of Bassey
Ironbar and Iguo Ironbar; and
WHEREAS,
he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from DeVry Institute of
Technology; master's degrees in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering,
and education from Tuskegee University; and a doctoral degree in electrical
engineering from Tuskegee University; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Tutu was a producer on
People's Television
for International Trends and Intercessory
Teaching with Victoria's Chapel and was
the CEO of In Living Relative Incorporation and Sons and Daughters of Zion;
and
WHEREAS,
he was the owner and operator of Tutu Cash Solutions and America's Realty,
taught for the Atlanta Public School System, and served as an adjunct professor
at Chattahoochee Technical College; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Tutu was a member of Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta, was inducted into
the Multi-Cultural Sports Hall of Fame, and was a faithful member of Chapel Hill
Harvest Church in Decatur; and
WHEREAS,
he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he
demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others;
and
WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Dr. Tutu will long be remembered for his love
of family and friendship, and this loyal community leader, neighbor, and friend
will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Dr. Solomon Desmond Tutu and express their
deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Solomon
Desmond Tutu.
