RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending the Emanuel County Forestry Unit on being named the Georgia
Forestry Commission 2010 Southern Unit of the Year; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the mission of the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) is "to provide leadership,
service, and education in the protection and conservation of Georgia's forest
resources"; and
WHEREAS,
one forestry unit is selected each year as the Georgia Forestry Commission's
Southern Unit of the Year based on various measures of accomplishments that are
weighed and voted upon by the Georgia Forestry Commission's Leadership;
and
WHEREAS,
the Emanuel County Forestry Unit's most notable achievements include involvement
in multiple community programs regarding the history and importance of
turpentine production, volunteering with the turpentine still at Georgia's
Agrirama, completing over 370 acres of prescribed burning assistance, plowing
387 miles of firebreaks, providing forest management advice on nearly 16,000
acres, leading multiple district training programs, being instrumental in
bringing the Region 4 and Statewide Future Farmers of America competition to
Emanuel County, and in organizing the local Pine Tree Festival which is a
thriving regional event that draws recognition to forestry and its economic
importance in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
in addition, the Forestry Unit maintained outstanding wildfire protection of
Emanuel County's over 306,000 forested acres during a wildfire season that
resulted in the damage or loss in Georgia of over $5.2 million worth of personal
property and threatened an additional $249 million worth of personal property;
and
WHEREAS,
due to the outstanding accomplishments of the Emanuel County Forestry Unit in
the year 2010, the Unit was selected as the GFC's Southern Unit of the Year;
and
WHEREAS,
the unit consists of dedicated GFC rofessional Rangers Doug Claxton, Josh
Claxton, Carson Jones, and Mike Jones and Forester Aaron Burton serving under
the leadership of Chief Ranger Doug Chassereau; and
WHEREAS,
the accomplishments of the Emanuel Forestry Unit are a clear indication of the
dedication and team work present at the unit, and the strong desire of the unit
to serve the local citizens of Emanuel County; and
WHEREAS,
the Emanuel Forestry Unit brings great pride to the citizens of Emanuel County,
the Statesboro District, the GFC, and the entire State of Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Emanuel County Forestry Unit for being named the 2010 Southern Unit of the
Year.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Chief Ranger Doug
Chassereau.
