A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, as Gwinnett County Day at the state capitol and
commending Gwinnett County, its 15 cities, and the Gwinnett County Chamber of
Commerce; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Gwinnett County was established by the Georgia General Assembly on December 15,
1818, and was named for Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's three signatories of
the Declaration of Independence and the state's second governor;
and
WHEREAS,
Gwinnett has been among the fastest growing counties in the nation for several
decades and has grown to become the second most populous and one of the most
ethnically diverse counties in Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Gwinnett's economy generates more than 325,500 jobs and $28 billion annually,
which represents 9 percent of Georgia's total overall economy, and has led the
state in job creation since 2000, totaling more than 34,000 new jobs;
and
WHEREAS,
Gwinnett is one of the most globally connected counties in the nation and is
home to one-sixth of Georgia's internationally based businesses;
and
WHEREAS,
the county's success can be attributed in part to its 15 cities: Auburn,
Berkeley Lake, Braselton, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville,
Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Rest Haven, Snellville, Sugar Hill, and Suwanee;
and
WHEREAS,
with private and public schools ranked among the nation's best and with one of
the nation's largest public school systems educating over 159,000 students,
Gwinnett County leads the country in education standards and achievements;
and
WHEREAS,
the county is home to four stellar institutions of higher education: Georgia
Gwinnett College, Gwinnett Technical College, the Philadelphia College of
Osteopathic Medicine, and the University of Georgia Gwinnett Campus;
and
WHEREAS,
a leader in business and in recreation, Gwinnett has two Fortune 1000 companies,
AGCO and Rock-Tenn, and four professional sports franchises, including the
Gwinnett Braves baseball team, Gwinnett Gladiators hockey team, Georgia Force
arena football team, and the Atlanta Vision basketball team; and
WHEREAS,
Gwinnett County has been recognized for having the nation's best library and
park system, has been named a Sportstown by
Sports
Illustrated, and was named the Best Place
to Live by Money
Magazine and the Best Place to Live and
Launch a Business by
Fortune Small
Business; and
WHEREAS,
the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce has been named one of the top three metro
chambers in the nation by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives and is now
the sixth largest chamber in the Southeastern United States; and
WHEREAS,
the Partnership Gwinnett Economic and Community Development Strategy has been
named one of the top economic development initiatives in the country by the
American Chamber of Commerce Executives; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Gwinnett County are justly proud of their community, its past,
and its many contributions to the state, and it is only proper to recognize
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, as Gwinnett County Day at the state
capitol.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize
Wednesday, February 25, 2009, as Gwinnett County Day at the state capitol and
congratulate Gwinnett County, its 15 cities, and the Gwinnett Chamber of
Commerce on their many outstanding accomplishments.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Gwinnett County Board
of Commissioners, Gwinnett County Board of Education, and the Gwinnett Chamber
of Commerce.
