A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Mr. Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr.; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Mr. Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr., on March 20, 2011;
and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Callaway was born in LaGrange, Georgia, the beloved second of three children
of Virginia and Cason Callaway, Sr., the founders of Callaway Gardens in Pine
Mountain, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
affectionately known by family and friends as "Caso," Mr. Callaway graduated
from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, where he would later go on
to serve as trustee emeritus, and attended The Citadel for two years;
and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army, valiantly and courageously protecting his fellow Americans during
World War II; and
WHEREAS,
a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Callaway was a founding member of St.
Nicholas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, donating five of the church's eight
acres; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Callaway attended Bowling Green Business University Academy, worked with
Callaway Mills, founded Dixie Size and Chemical in Columbus, served as director
of the former Fourth National Bank in Columbus, helped develop commercial
property around the former Columbus Square Mall, and founded Callaway Blue
Springs Water Company in Harris County; and
WHEREAS,
this generous community leader served the Boy Scouts of America as president of
the Georgia-Alabama Council and as a member of the national executive committee,
was a life-long member of the Callaway Foundation, and served on the board of
the Smithsonian Institute; and
WHEREAS,
a quiet philanthropist, Mr. Callaway donated 50 acres in Russell County for
Chattahoochee Valley Community College; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Callaway was united in love and marriage to Nancy Hodges Callaway for 61
wonderful years and was blessed with four remarkable children, Phebe Callaway
Robertson, Cason Callaway III, Kenneth Hodges Callaway, and Florence Callaway
Holmes; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Callaway will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal brother, husband, father,
grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of
knowing him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
honoring the life and memory of Mr. Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr., and express
their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Cason
Jewell Callaway, Jr.
