A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Lucy C. Huie, outstanding citizen; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
long before the Georgia General Assembly passed enabling legislation to create
the HOPE scholarship fund, another HOPE had been established, the Clayton County
grassroots organization known as Help Our Public Education; and
WHEREAS,
this outstanding organization was begun by Lucy Huie, her husband, and several
of her neighbors in Clayton County, Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
Lucy Huie is a long-standing member of the Clayton County community where she
and her family are considered a cornerstone on which the current community has
been built; and
WHEREAS,
with their tremendous dedication and perseverance, this organization was able to
fight for civil rights and the desegregation of the Clayton County School
System; and
WHEREAS,
despite threats and horrendous acts of intemidation conducted by the Klu Klux
Klan against her, she stood firm and bravely continued her efforts for equality
and justice; and
WHEREAS,
Lucy Huie's tremendous dedication to her community is further demonstrated
through her active service on numerous boards and associations, her long history
of community activism, and her support of the Clayton County arts;
and
WHEREAS,
she has honored Clayton County through her creation of the Oral History Project,
a local history of Clayton County since World War II based on interviews of
people who lived through this era of social change; and
WHEREAS,
Lucy C. Huie is a woman of great compassion and deep concern for her friends and
fellow citizens; and her loving, generous, and courageous spirit is an example
to all who know her; and it is only fitting and proper that this fine and
distinguished citizen who is a loving and caring public servant and friend to so
many be appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Lucy C. Huie for her exemplary public service to this state and extend their
sincere gratitude for her many contributions to her fellow
citizens.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Lucy C. Huie.
