A RESOLUTION


Recognizing January 24, 2012, as Tourism and Hospitality Day at the state capitol and commending the tourism industry of Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry plays an important role in our statewide economy and is vital for Georgia's economic prosperity and the quality of life for all Georgians; and

WHEREAS, the hospitality and tourism industry encompasses a broad range of businesses, events, and attractions; and

WHEREAS, happenings in the arts and music sectors help promote tourism and strengthen Georgia's rich cultural heritage; and

WHEREAS, current research shows that tourism demand of $28 billion generated $45 billion in business sales, including indirect and induced impacts; and

WHEREAS, the tourism industry sustained 391,000 jobs in 2010; and

WHEREAS, 10.4 percent of all jobs in Georgia are directly or indirectly sustained by tourism entities, making the tourism industry the fifth largest employer in the state; and

WHEREAS, representatives from the travel and tourism industry work hard to promote Georgia as a premier travel destination with unique destinations, events, and activities; and

WHEREAS, the contributions and efforts of Georgia tourism industry professionals to increase travel to and throughout Georgia in order to stimulate economic growth are applauded.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the tourism industry as critical to the economic vitality of the State of Georgia and declare January 24, 2012, as Tourism and Hospitality Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus and the Department of Economic Development.
