A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Ogeechee Technical College; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Ogeechee Technical College has been named as the state's 2011 Technical College of the Year by the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia and awarded President Dawn Cartee with the Perdue Award; and

WHEREAS, the judging for the award is based on several performance categories in the areas of technical education, adult education, economic development, resource development, administration, and national recognition, and the criteria includes enrollment numbers, graduates and graduation rate, student retention rate, job placement, licensure rate, the number of GED graduates who transition to college, and cost efficiencies; and

WHEREAS, the award is named in honor of former Governor Sonny Perdue for his many years of support for the technical colleges and their mission of workforce development through technical and adult education; and

WHEREAS, President Cartee and the faculty and staff have put forth an exceptional level of hard work on behalf of their students, the local community they serve, and the businesses and industries that rely on the college to fill the workforce with highly trained graduates; and

WHEREAS, a banner year for Ogeechee Technical College, enrollment grew by 10.3 percent between 2010 and 2011, with 4,470 students attending classes, the number of full-time equivalent students increased by 18.2 percent, and in the last year 993 students graduated in certificate, diploma, and degree programs, which was an 11.6 percent increase from the previous year; and

WHEREAS, by creating a respectful learning environment, Ogeechee Technical College enables students to learn with confidence, experience success, and achieve their maximum potential; and
WHEREAS, President Dawn Cartee has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in the teaching profession and her deep personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the devotion to providing the students of Georgia with a quality education demonstrated by President Dawn Cartee, teachers, and staff is worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body congratulate the faculty, staff, and students of Ogeechee Technical College for being named as the state's 2011 Technical College of the Year.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to President Dawn Cartee.
