A
RESOLUTION
Honoring
and celebrating the 100th birthday of Mary Hudmon Simmons; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mary Hudmon Simmons was born on April 15, 1912, in Opelika, Alabama, the beloved
daughter of William Earle and Katie Belle Hopson Hudmon and the admired sister
to her identical twin, Anne, and younger sister, Katherine; and
WHEREAS,
she graduated cum laude from Agnes Scott College with a bachelor's degree in
chemistry in 1933, and then taught mathematics at a private school in College
Park, Georgia, from 1933 to 1934 and at Druid Hills High School in Atlanta from
1934 to 1941 where she was selected Teacher of the Year; and
WHEREAS,
she married William Grant Simmons in 1940 and their union blessed them with
remarkable twin girls, Susan Hudmon and Nancy Hudmon; four wonderful
grandchildren, Meredith Hudmon Ragains, Stephen Harris Ragains, Susan Lester
Ledbetter, and Mary Elizabeth Lester; and six adored great-grandchildren, Olivia
Hopson Ledbetter, Madeline Susan Corvera, William Maxwell Ledbetter, Luke Hudmon
Ragains, Charles Joseph Corvera, and John Harold Ragains; and
WHEREAS,
a woman of deep and abiding faith, she is an active member at the First Baptist
Church of Sylvania and secretary at Philathea Sunday School Class;
and
WHEREAS,
she has always been a leader in her community where she has served as President
of the Sylvania Women's Club and Regent of the Brier Creek Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution where she has been a member for 62 years;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Simmons holds memberships at the Adams Brinson I Chapter of the National
Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, the Wednesday Birthday Club, the Friends
of Screven County Library, and the Screven County Reading Club where she is a
founding member; and
WHEREAS,
this distinguished gentlewoman has given inspiration to many through her high
ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens and she possesses the
vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character
which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life;
and
WHEREAS,
she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example she has made
of her life, she makes this world a better place in which to live, and it is
only fitting and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very
special and memorable time of her life.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in
commending Mary Hudmon Simmons on the occasion of her 100th birthday and wishing
her many more years of happiness.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mary Hudmon Simmons.
