A
RESOLUTION
Commending
the Georgia Institute of Technology on its award of a United States Department
of Transportation University Transportation Center; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the United States Department of Transportation has placed emphasis on advancing
technology and expertise around the country in the many disciplines comprising
transportation through research, education, and technology transfer;
and
WHEREAS,
to support this effort, the department sought proposals from America's leading
universities to establish research centers focused on addressing the challenges
facing transportation; and
WHEREAS,
selection for one of these prestigious centers would include a grant of $3.5
million in federal research funds to be matched with an additional $3.5 million
in funding from private sources and departments of transportation from across
the region over two years; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Institute of Technology joined approximately 60 other universities
in competing for selection as one of ten Tier One University Transportation
Centers; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia Tech collaborated with public and private partner institutions across
Georgia as part of its application, including Clark Atlanta University, Georgia
Southern University, Georgia State University, Southern Polytechnic and State
University, Spelman College, and the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
the proposal effort was led by an advisory board organized by a team of
transportation and industry experts at Georgia Tech, including Dr. Michael D.
Meyer, Dr. Catherine L. Ross, and Mr. Kenneth C. Stewart; and
WHEREAS,
the Georgia Institute of Technology received the unwavering support of Governor
Nathan Deal, Georgia's congressional delegation, the Georgia Department of
Transportation, and the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation in seeking a center
designation; and
WHEREAS,
in January of 2012, Georgia Tech was notified of its successful bid and was
awarded the National Center for Transportation System Productivity and
Management and its associated grant funding; and
WHEREAS,
the work of this center and its consortium partners over the next two years will
have the potential of providing significant regional and national transportation
solutions and recognition for the State of Georgia.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Georgia Institute of Technology and its partners on the successful pursuit
of a United States Department of Transportation University Transportation
Center.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Georgia Tech President
G.P. "Bud" Peterson.
