A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard on December 9, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beard was born on November 22, 1919, in Blythe, Georgia, a beloved daughter of Gartrell and Ollie Brown Tarver; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Paine High School in Augusta, Georgia, Mrs. Beard earned a bachelor's degree in home economics and natural science from Paine College and a master's degree in education and chemistry from Columbia University Teachers College; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beard completed post-graduate work at Farleigh Dickson University, where she was certified by the National Science Foundation Summer Institute for Junior and Senior High School Teachers of Science and Mathematics; and

WHEREAS, she dedicated 41 years to the field of education, teaching at South Carolina's Bettis Academy and Junior College and Augusta's Charles T. Walker Elementary, R. Johnson High, and T.W. Josey High schools; and

WHEREAS, in 1963, Mrs. Beard organized the Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club, which has advised and cultured young women for 47 years and groomed thousands of young women in the Augusta area; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Mrs. Beard was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church for 50 years, where she participated in several choirs, taught Sunday school, and served as a missionary and trustee; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beard was united in love and marriage to the love of her life, Mr. Ernest Beard, on June 27, 1948, and was blessed with four remarkable children, Rosa Ann, Kathyrn Lorraine, Ernest Eric, and Cheryl Juanita; and

WHEREAS, she was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren, Ernest, Katrina, Charles, Jennifer, Ashli "Becky," and Eugene; and six great-grandchildren, Alijah, Niyla, Charles, Jr., Ebony, Sholon, and DeCarlos; and

WHEREAS, she gave inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding she demonstrated to her family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Mrs. Beard will long be remembered for her love of family and friendship, and this loyal mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard.
