A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO PEACE DAY.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. (a) There is established a peace mission committee within the department of business, economic development, and tourism for administrative purposes.
(b) The purpose of the committee shall be to plan a peace mission in 2017 in honor of the tenth annual Peace Day, which shall occur on September 21, 2016. The committee shall plan, develop, and implement the mission, which shall include projects such as fund raising and donation collections to support orphans and combat hunger in foreign countries that resulted from conflict. The peace mission may build relationships with foreign countries through cultural exchange, trade, and charitable donations unless restricted by United States treaties or federal law.
(c) The peace mission committee shall be comprised of the following members:
(1) Three members, who shall be appointed by the governor;
(2) Two members, who shall be appointed by the president of the senate;
(3) Two members, who shall be appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives;
(4) The director of business, economic development, and tourism, or the director's designee; and
(5) A representative of the office of international affairs, who shall be appointed by the director of business, economic development, and tourism.
(d) The department of business, economic development, and tourism shall provide all administrative, technical, professional, and clerical support required by the committee.
(e) Members of the peace mission committee shall receive no compensation for their services, but may be reimbursed for expenses, including travel expenses, necessary for the performance of their duties under this Act.
(f) The peace mission committee shall cease to exist on December 31, 2017.
SECTION 2. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
