A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to Charter Schools.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 302D, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§302D-   Students in foreign countries; online curriculum for high school diploma; tuition.  (a)  Any charter school that offers a high school curriculum may establish a program to award a high school diploma to a foreign student; provided that the program:

     (1)  Includes two years of high school level coursework to be completed online through the Internet;

     (2)  Requires the foreign student to physically attend the charter school for at least one semester at the twelfth grade level; and

     (3)  Offers an appropriate curriculum for attaining a high school diploma in accordance with the standards established by the department.

     (b)  A charter school may assess tuition to a foreign student for the foreign student's participation in any program established by the charter school pursuant to subsection (a).

     (c)  For the purposes of this section, "foreign student" means a high school level student who permanently resides in a jurisdiction other than the United States and who satisfies the school age restriction set forth in section 302A-1134(c)."

     SECTION 2.  Section 302D-28, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by amending subsection (h) to read as follows:

     "(h)  No charter school may assess tuition[.], except as provided in section 302D-    ."

     SECTION 3.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
