A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO AN OFFICE OF APPLIED COMMUNITY RESEARCH.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part IV to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§304A- Office of applied community research. (a) There is established an office of applied community research at the University of Hawaii that shall develop and coordinate a program through which citizens, government agencies, and community organizations may apply for assistance in researching issues relating to community problems. All research projects authorized by the office shall be performed by university students and shall be supervised by an appropriate faculty member.
(b) The office shall:
(1) Establish guidelines for:
(A) The application procedure to obtain research assistance through the office;
(B) The selection of applicants who will receive research assistance; and
(C) The participation of students in research programs of the office;
(2) Assist potential applicants in the development of requests for research assistance that can be feasibly performed by students of the university; and
(3) Coordinate with the various departments within the University of Hawaii system to establish a system whereby students may participate in research programs of the office in return for academic credit."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
