A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO HEALTH.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to improve the overall health of the population in the State and reduce the incidence of cervical and other cancers by requiring the department of health to develop accurate, educational information on:

(1)  Human papillomavirus;

(2)  Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis;

(3)  The meningococcal conjugate vaccine; and

(4)  The annual influenza vaccine,

and to require the department of education to disseminate this information through the public schools to parents or guardians of all public school students entering the sixth grade.

     SECTION 2.  (a)  Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, each public school shall provide information on:

(1)  Human papillomavirus;

(2)  Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis;

(3)  The meningococcal conjugate vaccine; and

(4)  The annual influenza vaccine,

to each parent or guardian of a student who is entering the sixth grade.

     (b)  The department of health shall:

     (1)  Develop the information on:

         (A)  Human papillomavirus;

         (B)  Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis;

         (C)  The meningococcal conjugate vaccine; and

         (D)  The annual influenza vaccine; and

     (2)  Produce materials for distribution,

based on recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

     The information and materials provided by the department of health shall be disseminated by the department of education, at a minimum, to parents or guardians of public school students entering the sixth grade.  The information and materials provided by the department of health shall also be posted on the department of education's public website.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2050.

Description:

Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, requires public schools to annually provide information about the human papillomavirus and other vaccines to parents and guardians of students entering grade 6.  Requires the Department of Health to develop the information and produce materials and the Department of Education to disseminate the information.  (HB458 HD2)
