A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO SCHOOLS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- Shaded play areas; new elementary schools; existing elementary schools. (a) In order to reduce the risk of skin cancer from exposure to ultraviolet light at an early age, beginning July 1, 2009, the department shall include a shaded play area or areas of reasonable size on school grounds in plans for all new elementary schools.
(b) The department shall develop a program to provide a shaded play area or areas of reasonable size on the grounds of all existing elementary schools by June 30, 2012. This program shall be implemented on an incremental basis with priority given to those schools most in need."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
