HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF HAWAIIAN HOME LANDS TO DISPLAY A PORTRAIT OF PRINCE JONAH KUHIO KALANIANAOLE IN EACH STATE BUILDING, OFFICE, MEETING ROOM, AND WAITING AREA UNDER THE DEPARTMENT'S JURISDICTION.
WHEREAS, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was born on March 26, 1871; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio served as a non-voting delegate from Hawaii to the House of Representatives in Congress for twenty years, beginning in 1902; and
WHEREAS, his significant accomplishments include a $27,000,000 million appropriation for dredging and construction at Pearl Harbor, the establishment of the Makapuu Point Lighthouse, the build-out of the Territorial building, the building of Hilo Wharf, the establishment of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea National Park, and construction of a hospital at the Kalaupapa Settlement for persons with Hansen's Disease; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio also led efforts to convince the United States Congress to pass the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, 1920, under which the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands was created; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio passed away on January 7, 1922, at his home in Waikiki; and
WHEREAS, Prince Kuhio Day is a state holiday observed in Hawaii every March 26 to honor Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is urged to display a portrait of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole in each state building, office, meeting room, and waiting area under the Department's jurisdiction; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Hawaii, Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and the Comptroller.
